Pan-navigation technology is being used by the Library to enhance particular types of digitised collection material like pictures, maps and original artworks. Users can interact with these collection items, zooming in and out to look at the whole image or focus on a small detail. Bringing our heritage online in this way allows more people to see, and interact with, these works.
Our interactive digital version of the Early Melbourne Cyclorama offers you the opportunity to see how this technology works. Based on Samuel Jackson's Panoramic Sketch of Port Phillip from 1841, the Cyclorama was painted in 1892 by John Hennings. Measuring over 100 feet, it depicts the people, buildings and streets of the fledging Colony of Victoria. It also offers distant views of the Yarra River and the You Yangs.
